Spectators along Cromwell's Lake Dunstan were treated to a display of daring and speed throughout the weekend during the first series of the national formula one power boat regatta.

Hosted by the Lake Dunstan Power Boat Club, the series comprised more than 25 boats from throughout New Zealand.

Drivers navigated their way around a triangular course while travelling at speeds of up to 200kmh on the water.

Windy conditions made for a choppy lake surface, although racing continued as scheduled.

Prizegivings were held on Saturday and Sunday night at the Cromwell Town and Country Club, situated behind the course.

Organisers are hoping to secure the national regatta final in 2010.
