A homicide investigation has been launched after a man was found dead in Whangamata overnight.
Emergency services were called to the Achilles Ave property around 1.30am, Eastern Waikato area investigations manager Detective Senior Sergeant Graham Pitkethley said.
"Arriving staff arrived to find a man, believed aged 76-years-old deceased, and detectives are currently speaking to an occupant of the house.
"The investigation is currently in its formative stages and it is too early to comment on the nature of how the victim died or any type of weapon used."
A scene examination would take place this morning and police were appealing for anyone in the vicinity of the property overnight or who may have any information regarding the incident to contact the Operation Tiger team at Whangamata Police Station on (07) 865 0300.
