It was a real history lesson from Bruce Fummey. Not always totally accurate. But a lot more fun than any history class peddled by a teacher or lecturer in this town.
Fummey’s Scotland Made the World show was full of laughs and observations about what the Scots may or may not have done over the past 1000 years.
Fummey’s parents come from Scotland and Ghana, so he describes himself as the best Celtic-African comedian in the land.
Fummey started a Youtube show during lockdown on Scottish history and it has become a hit.
The show outlines the dominance and involvement of Scotland in battles through the years. The ties with the French, the battles over fish and cheese, and the heritage through the ages.
There was even time to have a go at modern times and poke a jab or two at the man of the orange shade.
Fummey threw a long thread through the times — the closeness of the clans and the poor plights of the Highlanders.
A visit to Carlisle Castle was a tall tale and the old English-Scottish rivalry was never far away. And of course the English were always on the losing side.
The ties between the French and the Scots run deep and these days they may seem odd bedfellows but the way Fummey tells it, they stood strong in an amusing way.
The packed audience lapped up the show and his ability to switch subjects kept the just over one-hour show lively.
And it was good to hear a comedian who did not have to resort to swearing every second minute to get a laugh.
