Dunedin man Jared Hewitt (20) shows off a 7.9kg salmon he hooked off Taiaroa Head, at the entrance to Otago Harbour, on Saturday.

It was the first time Mr Hewitt had landed a salmon in several years of fishing, but it did not come without a fight, taking 45 minutes to reel in.

New Zealand Salmon Anglers Association Otago branch past-president Wayne Olsen said Mr Hewitt's catch was a ''very, very good'' fish.

It was probably about 3 years old. Only about three or four fish that size were caught in the harbour each year, Mr Olsen said.
