A police officer talks to Hato Hone St John staff after a car hit a 10-year-old child in Brockville Rd on Wednesday.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said police were called to the incident at 3.20pm.

Otago coastal area road policing manager Senior Sergeant Karl Hemmingsen said the child ran across the road to the father "and didn’t look for traffic".

"Unfortunately, a vehicle hit them, with no space to avoid."

The child was taken to hospital as a precaution but suffered no injuries, he said.

A St John spokeswoman said an ambulance and rapid-response unit attended the incident and one patient, in a minor condition, was transported to Dunedin Hospital.
