Taieri to celebrate long-awaited shield win

There will be another party at Brooklands Park this week.

Taieri are still in celebration mode after breaking their long title drought.

They clinched the Bing Harris Shield with a comprehensive win over University-Grange last week.

It sealed the club’s first senior banner in 18 years.

The long wait was rewarded with a dominant performance.

Taieri have lost just one game this season — the T20 final — but have otherwise reigned supreme.

They banked the title with three rounds to spare, which highlights how consistent they have been.

Coach Vaughn Johnson was delighted for his charges. But he was particularly pleased for three men: team manager Malcolm Hope, club chairman Michael MacKenzie and club stalwart Barry Milburn.

"Those three men have been instrumental in keeping the club afloat," Johnson said.

"From my perspective, it was nice to win it for them."

And it is blokes like them who the team plan to share their success with this weekend.

The club have invited past players down to the club to watch them play North East Valley and to celebrate their success.

All-rounder Ruben Clinton has been in exceptional during his first season for Taieri.

He is the leading scorer in the Dunedin premier competition (494 runs at 44.91) and the third leading wicket-taker (21 wickets at 7.38), if the statistics available through PlayHQ are to believed. (The scoring platform has not proven particularly accurate during its three-year reign of terror.)

Right-arm medium pacer Kyle Hastie (20 wickets at 14.2) and Cameron Elliott (317 runs at 31.7) have had strong seasons as well.

Cameron Jackson and Ben Lockrose brought up 100 games for Taieri last weekend and have made some telling contributions throughout the summer.

"Ruben’s been a true professional, really," Johnson said.

"He wants to play first-class cricket, and I think he’s certainly done more than enough to get a look.

"We have a lot of players that are sort of knocking at the door in terms of cricket at the next level.

"But Ruben’s one that’s stood out in terms of his professionalism, and obviously guys like Beckham Wheeler-Greenall, who’s captained the side all year, has done a hell of a job.

"And our senior players like Cam Jackson. There’s no use naming too many of the players, because everybody’s contributed. That’s what’s been good about this team."
