Roller coaster stalls at Rainbow's End

The roller coaster at Rainbow's End stalled at its highest point this afternoon, with those aboard facing a nerve-wracking wait until it restarted.

Rainbow's End chief executive Chris Deere told 3News that people had been stuck at the top of the ride for about 10 minutes after a safety mechanism that indicated the ride was over-heating automatically shut it down.

"A couple of our senior staff went up as is procedure and explained what was going on to the customers while our maintenance technicians looked into it," Mr Deere said.

"I think a couple of customers were a bit upset but were spoken to and reassured. Everybody was perfectly safe."

Nobody had to be evacuated and the ride was restarted, allowing those on it to disembark normally, Mr Deere said.

The ride was closed for the rest of the day but he expected it would reopen tomorrow.

The breakdown didn't surprise some people on Twitter.

"Was only a matter of time before something went wrong with that rickety old coaster at Rainbows End," tweeted Paul.

"ahhh as an ex staff member that's just the norms haha," tweeted Leah.
