The Queenstown golfer was happy but frustrated after his opening round yesterday, where he carded 4-under-par 67 on the Remarkables course at Millbrook.
"It was a little bit frustrating. [It] would’ve been better to get a few more putts to drop," Campbell said.
"But nah, it’s always nice to go bogey free."
Campbell saved the best for last, conceding his iron shot on the final hole was one of his better swings.
"Coming down the stretch actually, I made some really good swings and that one into the last was good.
"Obviously would’ve been nice to convert."
Campbell attracted one of the biggest crowds on the Remarkables all day, teeing off with fellow Kiwi Steven Alker, who carded 1-under-par 70.
"It’s always nice to get peered with him.
"He’s a lovely guy," Campbell said.
"To have [the Open] here on my home course, at Millbrook, it’s always nice you get plenty of the members following along.
"Hopefully continuing it on [today] for them."
Campbell tees off Coronet today, which appeared to be the friendlier of the two courses yesterday.
"Probably in the past I’ve probably played that course a little bit better.
"It’s good to be right there and ... try and get up the top of that leaderboard.
"Hopefully another bogey-free round [today] would be great."
