The owner of Proctor Auctions is putting out a call for Dunedin businesses to get behind a charity auction to support Krystal Brens and her three daughters.
Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake will cover a small portion of her repair costs — leaving Ms Brens to come up with $141,000 herself.
"It is a huge comfort. The support’s amazing and it takes a little bit of weight off my shoulders."
Rent for her current accommodation was covered by insurance but was expected to run out in August and she was already paying rates and mortgage on her unlivable home.
"I don’t like the attention but I need it to help me get through, not just for myself but for my girls and also my dog."
Mr Proctor said he could empathise with Ms Brens’ situation as his family had to temporarily relocate after their home fell off its piles about six years ago.
The auction would likely happen in the next month, well before Ms Brens’ insurance payments ran out.
"We’re in a position to help out, so that’s what we like to do."
He hoped other business could "dig a little bit deeper" and give time, products or services to be sold off — all proceeds would go to Ms Brens.
