Dunedin Railways general manager Rebekah Jenkins said the company was contacted before the 3040-passenger cruise ship arrived yesterday because the waitlist for the train had reached about 70 people.
Rather than sending the typical 250-passenger train out to the port, Dunedin Railways "merged our two train sets together", she said.
With about 365 passengers aboard, the Taieri Gorge "super train" made the trip with three locomotives and 10 carriages.
