Police believe "high speed" was a factor in a crash that claimed the lives of two young people in Canterbury over the weekend.
Emergency services were called to the single-vehicle crash in the town of Clarkville, near Kaiapoi, just after midnight on Friday.
The crash happened in Butchers Rd about 12.10am, where police said a 20-year-old male and a 17-year-old female were found deceased.
A third person in the vehicle was taken to Christchurch Hospital.
"While investigations into the cause of the crash continue, initial indications suggest high speed was a factor in this crash, where the vehicle collided with a power pole," Canterbury rural area commander, Inspector Peter Cooper, said.
Police continue to work with the families involved and offer their sympathies to them during this traumatic time.
