The Gore district’s best and brightest are heading off to university this year with a bit of extra help, thanks to the Mataura Licensing Trust’s annual scholarships.

Six students will receive $1500 a year for three years to help as they head around the country to further their education.

The students are Jake Evans, who will be studying marketing management, Lucy Harrex (accountancy), Ella King (paramedic), Jessica Reid (nursing) and Gabby Shepard (medical imaging).

Ella said the scholarship would help immensely as she moved to Auckland this year.

"It will give me a financial boost, help me study and focus on my school without the financial pressure.

"It also means I’m representing the MLT and Gore in a way, which is really special."

Mataura Licensing Trust president Horace McAuley said he was impressed by the applicants.

"The selection process was as difficult as it’s been for a number of years. We have some very classy young people in the region."

He said it was important for the trust to continue giving scholarships.

"It’s just a part of our vision in what we do. We want to give the young people of the area as much opportunity to succeed as we are able to," Mr McAuley said.

He was without doubt the recipients would go on to great futures.

"They’re heading in some wonderful directions. So many different degrees, they’ll achieve in so many fields."
