Dunedin Car Meets organiser Izaak Van Leeuwen said the group started up a few months ago with the intention of having a place to meet, make some friends and have a good time.
On Saturday, the crew gathered in St Clair for a "best-dressed car" competition and about 30 were expected to cruise down to Knarston Park at Taieri Mouth for a sausage sizzle.
The prize for the best-dressed vehicle was a $40 Supercheap Auto voucher and a painting by a local Dunedin artist, while the second placegetter won a $20 voucher and a picture of their car drawn by Mr Van Leeuwen.
"I’m not an artist, so it won’t be very good unfortunately."
In the best-dressed competition was Payton Wells who entered in her tinsel-decked Mazda Atenza, nicknamed the "Mazdaslow".
"She’s called the Mazdaslow because a common Mazda is a ‘Mazdaspeed’, but I don’t have one and my Mazda is quite slow."
Miss Wells and her friends had been going to the meets for the past few months to socialise and make new friends.
"It’s to make a new name for ‘car people’, away from burnouts and skids ... this is genuinely for the socialisation and we’re loving it and we’ve made heaps of new friends," Miss Wells said.
