Decision on Nikken farms within two weeks

A decision will be made within two weeks on the sale of two North Otago farms by Japanese company Nikken Seil.

Company spokesman Katashi Kai said offers had been received for two farms bought since 2001.

They were the largest properties of about 460ha of land Nikken bought as part of plans to establish a business park just north of Oamaru.

Initially, it has offered Willowbank Farm (158ha) and Taipo Park (148.5ha), both on the banks of the Kakanui River, for sale.

Mr Kai could not say how many bids, which closed on Friday, had been received for the two properties.

A decision on those bids would be made within two weeks.

Six smaller Nikken properties, ranging in size from 6ha to 32ha, were also being advertised for sale.

Nikken Seil arrived in North Otago in 2000 when principal shareholder Dr Hirotomo Ochi bought Teschemakers and started a $3.5 million refurbishment to turn it into an international centre for health sciences.

In 2001, Nikken Seil bought the land opposite the Oamaru Racecourse on State Highway 1, just north of Oamaru, for a $20 million business park with a plan to attract international companies mainly with a food-processing background.

That was followed by the purchase of farmland for organic food production.

Dr Ochi's plans received a setback in June 2003 when fire caused major damage to Teschemakers.

The redevelopment continued, but Dr Ochi died in October 2005, and all projects were put on hold until Nikken decided what to do with them.
