Plans for two new rainbow crossings, proposed for the heart of Dunedin, feature a design that draws on mana whenua values.

Details of the rainbow crossings were included in the design for the $1.5 million Bath St upgrade project, to be considered at tomorrow’s council meeting.

Cr Jim O’Malley said no decisions had yet been made, but the proposed design envisaged two crossings in the CBD — one in George St (above) between the city council’s Civic Centre building and Bath St, and a second smaller crossing near the lower Stuart St intersection (below).

Artist Madison Kelly and designer Daniel Blackball Alexander were commissioned to develop the designs.

If approved at the meeting, the detailed design will be included within the $1.5m approved Bath St upgrade budget. About half of the budget is already earmarked for earthworks, stormwater, roading pavement, lighting and road marking.

Other features of the upgrade design plan include tohu whenua (cultural markers) at each entrance to Bath St, paved pedestrian zones in a new shared space in Bath St, incorporating pātiki and ara moana designs, improved lighting for better pedestrian safety and outdoor seating and native plantings in a new pocket park.
