A $5.6 million investment package for Molyneux Stadium has been approved by the Central Otago District Council.

The council approved the staged investment approach recommended by the Vincent Community Board.

Funding will come from the community board’s reserves, $1.2m being spent over nine years for building maintenance and renewal as part of the council’s long-term plan.

The remaining $4.4m will go into compliance upgrades which are planned for 2027-2028 such as earthquake strengthening, required asbestos removal and fire safety and accessibility improvements to the stadium.

Over the course of 30 years, investments in the stadium are estimated to total $12m.

Property officer Tara Bates said replacing the stadium would come at a conservative estimate of $15m, without factoring in demolition work.

She said that without maintenance and renewal, the stadium’s useful life would only be 25 years, but with the upgrades its useful life would be extended to 50 years or more.

The draft 2025-2034 long-term plan will be consulted on in March and will be adopted in June next year.
