Two Dunedin secondary school pupils agree having their work featured in a national magazine is a pretty cool accomplishment.

Freya Whiteside and Sophie Drummond had their writing and artwork featured in the 2024 edition of Toitoi, a magazine that publishes original material from young New Zealanders.

The pair were encouraged to enter the work by their teacher, Anna Garthwaite, and did so earlier this year.

Sophie entered a drawing of a character she created for a story she was illustrating.

It featured on the cover, the back page and another page of the magazine.

"I take quite a while to do my drawings, so it may be, six hours or longer.

"It went over the span of several days. I couldn't really track the time. It’s pretty cool."

She used Procreate to draw the work, she said.

Freya enjoyed spending the time to write stories, so writing a "then and now" story about her late Poppa seemed fitting.

The story was chosen for the magazine and she agreed with Sophie that it was cool to have it selected.

"I decided to write about that because I always used to go stay at his house in Balclutha and I wrote about his house before he died and then afterwards once it was being cleared out," she said.

The story took her two weeks to complete, much of it being done in class time.

"I never thought I was that good at writing. I'm really horrible at spelling."

Neither of them expected their work to make it in to the magazine.
