The young Taieri runner was the first Otago athlete across the line to win the historic Ness Cup mile handicap race at the Caledonian Ground at the weekend.
Dan O’Brien (6min 29.71sec) and Jared Brenssell (6min 35.48sec) crossed before Dobier, but were listed as unattached to a club, making them ineligible to win the title.
Dobier produced a strong race to finish in 6min 38.78sec and claim the title against a field of 24 runners.
Leith runner Claudia Cooke was the first woman home in 6min 42.15sec.
It was a busy weekend for Athletics Otago as it hosted the Dame Yvette Williams meeting and the South Island combined event championships.
Alexandra para thrower Mac Denniston continued to create some magic with the discus.
Denniston, who won a bronze medal in the seated discuss at the Oceania championships earlier this year, broke the F34 discus senior men’s and 20 and 19 age-groups New Zealand record of 20.75m.
He warmed into the competition with throws of 17.96m, 17.09m, 17.94m and 17.29m in the opening four rounds.
Denniston then produced an impressive 19.97m before he unleashed in his final throw with 20.75m.
Wanaka runner Phoebe Laker continued her fine form to start the track season.
She broke her own Otago record for the women’s 15, 16, and 17 years 400m yet again with her time of 56.40sec.
It has been some start for the Aspiring runner, who broke the record earlier this month with 56.90sec. She lowered the previous record by 0.03sec she set in October.
William Evans (Taieri) won the men’s under-16 octathlon at the South Island combined event, while Taieri clubmate Samuel McHutchon was runner-up.
The Caledonian will be a hive of activity again this weekend when it hosts the Otago mile championships and a combined Otago-Southland, and children’s, event.
