Cricket: Albion still undefeated

Albion 182 for seven beat NEV 179 for eight by three wickets

Albion cemented its place at the top of the table with a tight win over North East Valley at Culling Park on Saturday.

The Eagles, who are undefeated this season, restricted Valley to 179 for eight from 37 overs.

Tom Griffin top-scored with 39 at the top and Adam Miles (38) and Issac Gutschlag (26 not out) were the other major contributors.

Off-spinner Blair Brown took three for 11 to rob Valley's innings of any momentum, and medium-pacer Richard Buchanan claimed two for 30 from seven overs.

Opening bowler Dexter March was also challenging, with two for 39 from eight overs. He also added a valuable and undefeated 16 to help guide his side to a three-wicket win.

Felix Page got the chase off to a fine start with 59 from 60 deliveries, and Daniel Duke chipped in with 28 from 30.

Kaikorai 147 beat Taieri 145 by two runs

Josh Finnie helped Kaikorai secure a tense two-run win with a half century and a four-wicket bag at Bayfield Park.

The 17-year-old Otago Boys' High School pupil scored 67 from 52 deliveries to prop up a rather disappointing innings of 147 all out. Opener Dan Sharples made 31 and Shammika Rodrigo (16) and Ricky Black (13 not out) made cameos.

Shelford Meads - great name for a rugby player, that - took three for 50. Matt Bruce, Matt McCallum and Dwayne Weir nabbed two apiece in a fine bowling effort.

Unfortunately for Taieri, its batting was not of the same standard. It was rolled for 145, as Finnie picked up four for 20 from 9.4 overs.

He has been named in the Otago squad for the warm-up games against Scotland and Ireland this week. He is one to watch for the future.

Green Is 244 for eight beat Caris-Dunedin 107 by 137 runs

Green Island rebounded from its loss to Albion last week with a comprehensive 137-run shellacking of Carisbrook-Dunedin at Sunnyvale.

Gregor Croudis set the platform with 68 at the top and Ben Hitchcock (33), Russell Ritchie (44), Hayden Finch (32) and Dion Lobb (34 not out) all contributed to an impressive innings of 244 for eight. Ritchie, Finch and Lobb hit 10 sixes between them as the home side cashed in on its solid beginning.

Carisbrook-Dunedin opening bowlers Chris Ware and Josh Cunis avoided the carnage, taking two for 33 and two for 30 respectively.

The visiting side could muster only 107 in reply. Ritchie completed a strong match with three for 25 and Matthew Lobb was tremendous with four for 22.

Otago Country v University-Grange, game abandoned

Otago Country might have got a little bit lucky. It posted a modest 175 at Molyneux Park but University-Grange did not get the opportunity to chase the target, as poor weather intervened.

Kieran Parker top-scored with an undefeated half century. No 11 batsman Sean Moran added a valuable 20 in a 53-run stand for the last wicket.

Sam Petersen bowled superbly to take four for 27 from 10 overs.
