Nearly three decades of encouraging, saying yes and connecting people came to a close this week.

Central Otago Reap manager Bernie Lepper farewelled her role of 27 years in the way she had worked on Thursday — surrounded by staff who had become friends, her family and community members who admired her achievements.

Mrs Lepper, 68, was awarded a Queen’s Service Medal for her education and community work last year and was recognised this year as the Leader of the Year at the Ace Aotearoa conference.

An afternoon tea was held in the Alexandra Community House, which Mrs Lepper was instrumental in establishing in 2007, to pay tribute.

Reap board member Gavin Dann said there was a staffing problem at Reap.

"They don’t want to leave."

Kathi McLean said Mrs Lepper never said no to ideas.

Mrs Lepper said she believed learning changed lives.

This year alone 150 people had gained driver’s licences through the Drive My Life programme.

"There is always something, a new challenge and that’s part of why I stayed."

When she began there were five staff on the payroll and now there were 30.

"Some things have been transformational, empowering people to achieve their goals and dreams."

Mrs Lepper planned more cycling and time with family, including granddaughter Evie who celebrated her first birthday on Thursday.
