Waipawa shearer Cam Ferguson won his third open machines title at the 47th Waimate Shears on Saturday, seeing off five times world champion David Fagan in the final.

Ferguson set the fastest time of 16min 31.77sec in the six-man final, each finalist shearing 20 sheep.

For the first time in its 47-year history, the Shears included a transtasman blade-shearing battle. Shearing four sheep each, Tony Dobbs (12min 46.89sec) and Brian Thomson (13min 16.38sec), representing New Zealand, won with 111.414 points, beating Australia's John Dalla (13min 57.22sec) and Ken French (16min 16.55sec).

Local shearers also celebrated success. Oamaru's Ant Frew won the open novice final and Waimate's Corey White took the intermediate crown. Waimate Shears president Warren White said he was very pleased everything had run smoothly on Friday and Saturday.

Crowd numbers had dropped in recent years, but Mr White said it was encouraging to see good numbers of young shearers entering the competition.

Saturday's events were once spread out over two days, but were now run on one day, making it possibly the biggest one-day shearing show in the country - or southern hemisphere, Mr White said.

Preparation for the weekend's events started about six months ago, as the organisers worked with Shearing Sports New Zealand and local farmers. About 100 volunteers ensured the two-day event ran smoothly, Mr White said.

He expressed his thanks to volunteers, sponsors and the local farmers who supplied the 1400 sheep.

The senior final was won by Ethan Pankhurst, of Masterton/Fairlie.

In the junior final, the females took the honours. First place went to Kelly MacDonald, of Lake Hawea and Scotland's Emily Te Kapa was runner up.

Tony Dobbs, of Fairlie, won the blade-shearing final.

In the woolhandling, Gisborne's Joel Henare won the open final, while Kelly Luke, of Wairoa and Peketai Puna, of Napier, won the senior and junior finals respectively.
