Long removal ahead

Removing asbestos dust from the Toitū Otago Settlers Museum storage space could take years, the Dunedin City Council has been told.

As part of routine work, Toitū collections staff team began investigating asbestos-containing materials in 2022.

The council has been developing a methodology for identifying and remediating the affected storage areas.

Museum director Cam McCracken told the council’s community services committee yesterday remediation was likely to be a multi-year project.

"It’s not an unsafe situation."

The asbestos was on the collection, but it had come from other buildings, Mr McCracken said.

"This is a very manageable situation and we will tackle it as time and resources allow over the next few years."
