Contractors shovel aggregate in lower Stuart St, where it intersects with Bath St in central Dunedin, last week.

The work is part of a project to replace degraded underground pipes in Bath St.

"We recently excavated the low point of Bath St", a council spokesman said.

"The majority of the work has focused on re-routing the underground pipes and connecting them back to the original brick barrel main pipe from 1887."

It was still in exceptional condition, he said.

The Dunedin City Council hopes to reopen Stuart St early next month, while the full project is scheduled to be completed by May next year.
