Mountain Biking North Otago is ''starting from scratch'' at Cape Wanbrow, after all of its trails were destroyed when trees were felled earlier this year.

A small team of dedicated volunteers have helped to complete 2km of a rebuild of up to 8km of single track, which will replace all the trails that were lost.

Mountain Biking North Otago president Andrew Milne said the group had received $5000 in funding from the Waitaki District Council.

''Funding will mainly be used on diggers, which will greatly speed up progress,'' Mr Milne said.

''To make the money go further we are using the digger to cut basic track lines, then finishing them by hand - some tracks have been built entirely by hand.''

The new trail network will be similar to the previous network, but with some improvements.

The group also hopes to minimise interference with the walking tracks.

''We've got the chance to start again and get things right.''

The views from the completed trails were ''great'' in the absence of trees.

Signs and maps will be installed once more of the tracks are complete.

The terrain is graded intermediate to difficult, but there would also be easier tracks.

There will be regular track building sessions over the coming weeks and Mountain Biking North Otago would welcome extra volunteer help from the community.

Anyone interested in volunteering their time can contact Mr Milne on 027-485-5518.
