Not many student flats in Dunedin can boast about having their own house band.

But the University of Otago students who will be living at 660 Castle St next year can.

Emilie Murphy, Ben McMorran, Jamie Hall and Casey Jowsey are the winners of the 2025 Six60 scholarship which gives them a chance to kick-start their music careers.

The scholarship was established in 2021 by New Zealand band Six60 and the university, and includes a $10,000 rent rebate, as well as mentoring from some of the band’s members and access to the university’s recording studios.

The quartet will live together in Six60’s former Castle St flat bought by the band in 2021.

Kit player and music and marketing student Jamie Hall said he was very grateful for the scholarship.

"It means I’ll be able to put more focus on my music career next year.

"It’s not just the facilities we get access to. It’ll sort of be like living in a pool of inspiration, living with other great musicians, just listening to them and seeing how they come up with their music.

"We all play different instruments so we can all start a band together — probably the only flat in Dunedin that has a house band."

The former Trinity Catholic College student said he was in shock when he got the phone call saying he had been selected for the scholarship.

"I just spent the rest of the day with a massive grin on my face.

"I'm also really proud to be the first drummer to get this scholarship."

Music and chemistry student Emilie Murphy said the scholarship was "a once-in-a-lifetime chance".

The vocalist has been playing guitar and piano since about age 5, and has so far released music on Spotify with other musicians.

"I'd been looking at this scholarship before I even came to university, so to hear that I had won the scholarship was incredible," she said.

"The opportunity to learn alongside three incredible musicians and to work with the band is a dream come true.

"This scholarship to me feels like an open door into the music industry, and I can't wait to see where it leads me."

Music and theatre studies student Casey Jowsey, and pharmacology and information science student Ben McMorran said they too were delighted to have been selected.

"I was in complete shock and full of emotional happiness," Mr Jowsey said.

"I almost thought it was a dream."

Six60 lead guitarist Ji Fraser said the band was really excited to work with this group of students.

"The last couple of years, we’ve been lucky enough to mentor some incredible and inspiring scholarship recipients, and we expect another great year."
