International visitor numbers at Queenstown Airport continued to rise in August and the year-to-date figure was nearly 30% ahead of the same period last year.

In the month of August, 55,125 passenger movements through the airport were recorded, up 26.1% on the 43,731 in August last year.

For the financial year to date, a total of 111,750 passenger movements represented a 27% increase on the previous corresponding period, and on a 12-month rolling average, the 332,149 movements represented a 29.7% rise.

Craigs Investment Partners broker Chris Timms said one of the interesting figures included in the Auckland International Airport monthly traffic update was the 36.7% increase in transtasman flights in August this year compared with August 2013.

The extra flights were because of capacity increases driven by strong ski-season demand.

Jetstar also announced it would schedule three direct flights a week to the Gold Coast from mid-December.

''It just shows the joys of having someone [Auckland Airport] with a bit of strength to attract airlines to the area and get people through the airport.''

Overall, passenger movements through Auckland Airport were up 1%. Winter holiday travel continued to drive growth with Pacific Island routes up 4.4% and travel to Hawaii up 9.1%.

South America travel rose 39.3%, including 2000 extra transit passengers, LAN Air now flying daily services to Santiago.

New Zealand residents took 1.8 million overseas trips in August, up 3.8%. About 40% of the trips were to Australia. The next most visited destinations were the United States and Fiji.

Further growth was expected as a result of Air New Zealand's planned capacity increases in 2015, of 16,000 seasonal seats to Nadi, 6600 new seats to Vancouver and 56,000 extra seats to Los Angeles, as well as retimed connections to the East Coast.

Regarding international arrivals, Mr Timms noted the greater numbers coming from Asia.

Australia remained the main market with 51,316 passenger movements in August, but that was down 3.9% on the pcp.

China was up 9.8% at 19,192, the US was up 7.9% at 8296, the United Kingdom was down more than 10% at 6192, Japan was up 6.2% at 7526 and Germany was up 8% at 2755.

Visitor arrivals from India were up 68.7% in August at 2636.

Auckland Airport said there had been ''impressive growth'' from the Indian market. Indian visitor arrivals to Auckland were up 19.2% for the 12 months ending August and up 50% on the financial year to date.
