Late last month CCTV cameras outside the Dunedin City Library were added to the current network monitored by police.
Dunedin City Council liquor licence project officer Kevin Mechen said the plaza area outside the library had attracted ''a lot of hassles'', such as nuisance and disorder type offences.
''It can be a hang-out place for young people and it is a way of keeping an eye on them and if something looks like it is brewing, they [the police] can wander up and have a yarn with them,'' he said.
The feed from the analogue cameras had been converted to digital format, with that footage now monitored and recorded by staff at the Dunedin Central Police Station.
Under the old system, footage was viewed only after an incident was reported.
The upgrade cost a couple of thousand dollars from last year's budget, Mr Mechen said.
He acknowledged talks were under way to extend the city's camera network.
That could include CCTV cameras along Princes St - between Moray Pl and the Octagon - and part of George St near busy late-night eateries.
The city's 14 cameras went live in November 2010 as a part of a joint safety project between the Dunedin City Council, police and the Ministry of Justice.
