Three medals from five athletes proved a good return for Otago representatives at the national road championships in Tauranga on Saturday.

Joshua Baan continued to impress in winning his third national title in seven months when he claimed gold in the junior men's 8000m race, while Louisa Andrew came away with double gold by winning the women's 40-44 age-group title as well as clinching overall honours in a combined age-group race over 5000m.

Otago's third medal came in the masters women's 35-39 grade in which Jude Patterson finished third.

For Baan, who only a week earlier celebrated his 19th birthday, the year to date has been nothing short of spectacular after he won the national junior 5000m track title in March and the national junior cross-country title last month.

Under coach Paul Macdermid, Baan, a first-year accounting and finance student at the University of Otago, took a steady approach into Saturday's race, contenting himself with sitting just off the lead until 2km out when he challenged for the lead. Such was the challenge he mounted the field dropped off his pace as he powered away to break the tape in 25min 19sec.

Although not one of his quickest runs over the distance, a demanding 400m uphill gradient, wind and tactics all played a part in his victory.

''It all went pretty well,'' Baan said of his victory.

''Training's going well, coaching and times. It's all falling into place.''

The next major challenge for Baan will be at the Zatopek meeting in Melbourne where he is hoping to record another top result and a personal-best time for the 3000m.

Over the past 12 months, Baan has posted a 3min 58sec 1500m time and run 15min 5sec for the 5000m.

Otago's other gold medallist, Andrew, was ''rapt'' with her result.

Andrew (40) wasted little time setting off after gold in the combined masters and junior women's field for the 5km title.

With the junior women starting 1min ahead of the combined masters field, Andrew found she had something to chase.

And chase them down she did, as she soon found herself running through the junior field.

She finished with only the junior medallists ahead of her in 17min 52sec.

Like Baan, Andrew also used the uphill gradient to her advantage to lever pace for a strong downhill run.

After such a fast start, Andrew found herself isolated from the masters field.

''I didn't know where they were. So I just had to keep going,'' she said.

''I'm really rapt. And to think I was heading off girls 20 years younger.''

Andrew's next race will be the half-marathon section of Sunday's Dunedin Marathon.

In other Otago results, Caden Shields was 12th in the senior men's 10km in 32min 10sec, Christine Montgomery fourth in the masters women 45-49 in 20min 36sec and Patterson third in the women's 35-39 in 21min 13sec.
