Central Otago District Mayor Tim Cadogan addresses Maniototo residents, council staff and elected members at the Ranfurly Rugby Club on Thursday night.

About a dozen residents attended Mr Cadogan’s presentation and Q&A session on the proposed restructure of the rating for Central Otago District Council services.

At last week’s council meeting, councillors agreed to consult on whether more services should be rated for across the whole district.

At present, 82% of rates for water, roading and waste are collected at a district level, and 18% of rates for property, parks, cemeteries, pools and community grants, except museums, are collected at a ward level.

The final decision will be made at the council’s September meeting.

Three options will be presented to the council — having all property, parks, cemeteries, pools and museums managed across the entire region; making changes but having an adjusted rating for Teviot Valley to offset charges for the locally owned pool; or making no changes.

A show of hands at Ranfurly’s meeting showed preference for options 2 and 3.

Further meetings are to be held in Roxburgh, Alexandra, Cromwell and online throughout this month.
