Otago University picked up their first win in the Women’s South Island League in Nelson.

They beat Nelson Suburbs 2-0 away on Saturday.

Both teams spurned good opportunities in the first half, and it remained 0-0 at halftime.

University pressed high in the second half and were rewarded when Aynsley Martin opened the scoring.

They secured three points when Elise Jackson chased down the ball, beat a couple of players and slotted it past Amber MConnichie.

Roslyn Wakari lost 6-1 to Coastal Spirit at home.

When Sophia Body scored in the 60th minute for Roslyn to reduce the deficit to 2-1, an upset looked possible. But Spirit responded emphatically with four goals in the final 22 minutes.

Yesterday, Dunedin City Royals beat Cashmere Technical 1-0.

In the men’s ODT Southern premiership, Green Island had its second thrilling 4-3 victory in a row — this time on the road against Northern Hearts in Timaru.

Green Island raced out to a 3-0 lead in the opening 16 minutes, thanks to Finlay Kruger’s brace and Spencer Smith.

Kruger’s opening goal on five minutes changed the momentum of the game and doubled their lead three minutes later and Smith headed home from a corner.

Kruger then broke through again in a great opening quarter.

Hearts’ Bailey Chambers pulled one back on 27 minutes to make it 3-1 at halftime.

Kevin McLaughlin further reduced the deficit early in the second half for the home side, in what was a very even contest for the rest of the game.

Hearts hit the woodwork twice, before Green Islands’ Tom Milton scored a superb direct free kick in the 86th min.

Hearts’ Tyler Cunningham hit a brilliant half volley from outside the box in the 91st min to narrow the gap in a nervous wait for Green Island, who hung on to win.

Queens Park and Northern both lost ground in the race for the title with home defeats.

Northern lost 1-0 to Wānaka at the Caledonian, Ethan Arratia scoring the winner with nine minutes left.

Both teams had near identical shots, free kicks, corners and there was nothing to separate them until the 80th minute.

Wānaka won back possession in their own box, moved down the pitch to Anthony Sprowson who crossed to find an unmarked Arratia in the box to score from close range.

Despite Queens Park led at halftime through Rodrigo De Camargo’s brace, but Dunedin City Royals striker Lucas Townend was in untouchable form, bagging four goals in the 4-3 victory for the Royals.

Mosgiel did not suffer any dip in form with a 5-0 win at Memorial Park over Roslyn Wakari.

Rory Findlay opening the scoring on 17 minutes when he outpaced the defence on the left flank and slotted home past Tom Stevens.

Rhys Quarrell headed home emphatically from Luke Clissold’s superb outswinging cross on 24 minutes.

Three minutes later, Quarrell found himself one-on-one with Stevens and banged in his 22nd league goal of the campaign.

Roslyn came out firing in the second half and hit the woodwork twice with Nathan Wilkie’s effort coming off the crossbar.

Just as Roslyn were getting back into the match Clissold scored in the 76th minute and claimed his brace with another in injury time.
