The Dunedin Thunder posted their first win of the season.
They put six goals past the West Auckland Admirals in Dunedin on Friday night to register a 6-2 win.
The Admirals scored in overtime to edge the Thunder 4-3 in the second of the two fixtures on Saturday.
That was a shame for the home team as they would have been desperate for the win to help celebrate a milestone for the club.
They had retired the No 16 jersey which stalwart Paris Heyd wore during his 12 seasons with the side.
That said the Thunder got a breakthrough win and went close in the second match.
The Thunder fell behind 1-0 in the opening game but goals from Ryan Wonfor, Ian Audas and Bryce Allan gave them a 3-1 lead at the first break.
The Admirals won the second period 1-0 but the Thunder slammed in three more goals in the final period to complete a nice win.
Matt Enright, Jack Lewis and William Barry banged in the goals.
Saturday’s fixture was much closer.
The visitors took the lead 10 minutes into the game and goals to Justin Dangle and Josh Whitston-Lee in the second period saw the Admirals clear out to a 3-0 lead.
But the home team rallied. Audas and Cole Beckstead scored and Audas added a second early in the third period to level the score.
But Flynn Hayward-Jones nailed the winner for the visitors in overtime.
The Thunder’s next assignment is against the Canterbury Red Devils in Christchurch next weekend.
