Taieri MP Ingrid Leary has declined to comment on whether she is under the gun for remarks she made at a select committee.

Stuff has reported NZ First has filed a complaint to Speaker of the House Gerry Brownlee against Ms Leary after she called NZ First MP Tanya Unkovich an "anti-trans activist" during a health select committee last month.

On Tuesday in Parliament, NZ First leader Winston Peters asked Mr Brownlee for an update "about the behaviour of a member of Parliament for the Labour Party".

"We understand that that was referred to that member, who has yet not replied to you. We’d like to be brought up to date as to what’s going on."

Stuff reported Ms Leary, during a health select committee last month, asked Mental Health Minister Matt Doocey how he responded to concerns from "the OutLine trans group, who are concerned that one of the government members, Tanya Unkovich, has been emailing NGOs about Gumboot Friday, including on May 22, 2024, and that she is a known anti-trans activist".

The matter could go to Parliament’s privileges committee.

Ms Leary declined to comment on the matter to the Otago Daily Times "due to procedural rules".

A spokeswoman for the Labour Party also declined to comment.
