Priscilla Rasmussen could hardly contain her excitement.

The Auckland captain had just walked off the court after an influential performance to help her team beat Waitakere 1 45-44 in extra time to claim the national under-18 title at the Edgar Centre in Dunedin yesterday.

"It feels great," the goal shoot said.

"I can’t really describe it at the moment but I’m just really happy, really proud of the girls that we walked away with the win there.

"It was a bit of a close one ... just really proud of the grind that we put out there."

Auckland held a 22-20 lead at halftime, but Waitakere came back and led 34-32 at the end of the third quarter and the scores were tied 40-40 at the end of regular time.

Auckland — coached by Priscilla’s mother Rachel, a former Mystics, Pulse and Steel defender — last won the Margaret Forsyth Cup in 2021 and were proud to represent Auckland province, alongside their neighbours Waitakere, in the final.

Rachel Rasmussen put their success this season down to having a full complement of players among the squad.

"I think it’s having a strong 12," she said.

"We were able to utilise every single player pretty consistently throughout the tournament, which allowed everyone to get a go and have some fresh legs come finals."

Dunedin finished fifth — the highest place from a South Island team — after they overcame North Harbour 26-22.

Dunedin, who also finished fifth last year, earlier thumped Eastern Waikato 51-24 to advance to the fifth-sixth playoff.

Invercargill finished 16th, Central Lakes 22nd and Eastern Southland 34th.

Waitakere won the national under-18 men’s title with a convincing 44-21 win over Dannevirke in the final.

Dunedin finished fourth after a 41-40 loss to Tauranga in their playoff and Invercargill secured fifth place with a 35-34 win over Howick Pakuranga.
