Otago Embroiderers’ Guild conference exhibitions co-ordinator Suzanne Elliot said the turnout had been "above expectations" over the exhibition’s opening weekend as lots of people had travelled to Dunedin for the Association of New Zealand Embroiderers’ Guilds conference - as well as celebrating the association’s 50th anniversary.

At least 350 people had visited the exhibition so far, she said.

After a weekend of speakers, the association was holding four days of classes at St Hilda’s Collegiate School.

The exhibition featured 106 embroidered works, and she hoped it would raise the profile of embroidery as an art form, Mrs Elliot said.

"It’s not your granny’s doilies, by any means", she said.

The exhibition is open for public viewing until July 26 at the Art Society rooms at the Dunedin Railway Station.
