That is the case tonight for Sydney FC and new coach Graham Arnold when his side plays Newcastle United at Forsyth Barr Stadium.
The side is only four weeks into a lengthy pre-season.
The combinations are still being searched for, and match fitness is not where it needs to be.
Arnold, who has taken the reins at Sydney this season from the sacked Frank Farina, is completely realistic about what his team will deliver tonight.
''We have not analysed Newcastle too much but it is all about us.
"I'm new to the job, I'm learning to know the players and beginning to see their strengths and weaknesses,'' he said.
''We have been working hard on our structures and tactics. We do not start until October 11, so we are a long way away.
''I do not think we are 100% ready for it. Far from it. But the boys are only four weeks into it and only had one friendly game.
"But I expect the adrenaline to kick in and the boys will get through on freshness, as well. We are probably not ready for 90 minutes but it is a great opportunity for the players.''
Sydney had its first hit-out last week when it played the Macarthur Rams, a New South Wales second division state side, and had a good 5-1 win.
But the opposition tonight is expected to be a million miles better than that.
Arnold said Sydney was excited to be facing two Premier League sides.
It will play West Ham in Wellington on Saturday.
''It is a wonderful opportunity for Sydney FC and the players to be invited to this tournament.
"We are very grateful for that, for a start. To be going against two premier league teams in the next week is great.''
With the rain beating down on the roof late yesterday, Arnold was pleased the match would be under cover.
New Sydney signing All Whites striker Shane Smeltz will not front tonight.
Arnold said Smeltz may play later in the week but had only done three to four days' training coming back from a calf strain and would not be risked tonight.
Smeltz had joined the club on a one-year contract after leaving the Perth Glory.
