Former Southland district mayor Frana Cardno has been discharged from Dunedin Hospital where she had been transferred after falling ill during an overseas trip.
Mrs Cardno had been visiting her son, Andrew, and his family in the United States recently and was admitted to a Sydney private hospital on her return journey after becoming unwell, Southland Mayor Gary Tong said.
She was transferred to Dunedin Hospital early last week where she remained for several days supported by family and friends.
Mr Tong said he understood the family had been restricting visitors and had requested privacy while Mrs Cardno ''comes to terms'' with the illness and treatment plan.
Mrs Cardno retired as mayor last year after 35 years in local politics - 11 on the Te Anau community board and 24 on the council, including 21 as mayor.
It is understood the Cardno family will be releasing a media statement today.
