Hoop fever hits

Basketball fever hit Oamaru yesterday as the annual Network Waitaki year 7 and 8 tournament began at noon.

Teams from around the South Island have come to Oamaru for the three-day tournament, which is being held at the Waitaki Recreation Centre.

Organiser Bronwyn Banks said four local teams had entered, while 19 had come from out of town.

The tournament, one of the North Otago Basketball Association's biggest fundraisers, proved a huge boost each year.

Oamaru was also set to benefit from a big influx of guests. More than 250 people were expected to come from out of town for the tournament, and they would require food, accommodation and activities, Mrs Banks said.

Today, there will be 12 hours of basketball action at the Rec Centre, between 8am and 8pm. Tomorrow, games start at 9am, and the last is at 3pm.

The tournament will end with a prizegiving from 4pm.
