A beer festival was held at the weekend to raise money for families going through health turmoil.

The Moss Cross Memorial incorporated charity hosted a "German-style beer festival" on Saturday at the South Otago Town and Country Club in Balclutha.

The beer festival was an extra event the charity organisation held to raise money for local families going through health turmoil.

The events were inspired by the late Joseph "Moss" Cross, who died eight weeks after being diagnosed with signet ring cell carcinoma of the appendix, a rare and aggressive cancer which sealed his fate at only 36 years old.

His death has since sparked the creation of a charity in his name, and now more than $30,000 to date has been raised to assist other families in South Otago going through major health struggles.

The festival had various activities, including stein holding, an eating/drinking competition, a wheelbarrow race and yodeling, along with a DJ and food.

The charity organisation sold nearly 200 tickets and the building was packed.

Organisation member Georgia Redshaw said the event was "fantastic".

"We raised nearly $5000, which we’re very happy about," Miss Redshaw said.

"The committee put a lot of hard work into it and we’re thrilled with how it turned out.

"Everyone seemed to have a fantastic night and it was great to bring people together.

The charity’s next event is their annual car cruise in September.

The group is aiming to host an event similar to the beer festival once a year, Miss Redshaw said.

"We plan to have one small event and the car cruise each year to make sure we raise enough for the families who need it."
