Pedalling pupils raise $10,000 in a day

Dunedin primary school pupils put their pedals to good use and raised a third of the cost of a $30,000 mountainbiking track in just one day.

Yesterday, Abbotsford School pupils celebrated the opening of their new asphalt learn-to-ride biking track with a wheel-a-thon that raised more than $10,000 for a second track.

Principal Stephanie Madden said the pupils used the event to raise money for a mountainbiking track through the forested area near the back of the school.

They signed up friends and family to sponsor them before getting on their bikes and scooters and going around the track for 15 minutes.

"The kids raised over $10K just today, which was pretty fabulous."

The new asphalt track had winding corners, posts for navigating, and other road-markings to practise with, with grass on either side for any tumbles.

Fundraising for the track had taken 18 months, with the pupils contributing $50,000 to the final total through various community fundraising efforts.

For the mountainbiking track to go ahead, the school needed to raise a further $20,000, but she said if yesterday’s efforts were anything to go by, that target should be achievable.

"We’ve had huge support. The entire project is $150,000, so it is a big project.

"We have had huge support from BikeOn ... Community Trust also helped out with a significant donation, and we’ve just got a little more to go."
