'No obvious motive'

Police investigations continue into the shooting of about 195 sheep on the Ngapara farm of Peter and Janine Stackhouse.

Detective Warren Duncan, of Oamaru, said yesterday the deaths appeared to be an ''act of wanton destruction with no obvious motive''.

''Our scene examination has ruled out that the sheep have been attacked by dogs, but we are still working to determine the specific circumstances,'' he said.

''This is an unusual event because so many sheep were killed and there is no evidence that any of them were intended to be stolen or slaughtered for meat.''

Police have received some ''good information'' from members of the public which they are following up.

''However we're still keen to hear from anyone who has any information that might help us solve this case,'' Det Duncan said.
