Taking a break with a book at the annual Oamaru Bookarama yesterday were Jacinta Kennedy and her 18-month-old son, Blair Newton, who were at the sale before the doors opened to get the best pick. Photo by David Bruce.
Thousands of books, most only $1 each, were stacked in the Oamaru Club and more than 100 people were waiting outside when the Oamaru Rotary Club sale opened at 9am.

Club president Helen Webster said there had been a ''fantastic response'' to the appeal for donations of books, although there were not quite as many paperbacks and soft-cover fiction titles given for the sale as usual.

She thought that might be because keen readers of fiction were now buying more e-books, which could take its toll on future sales.

The sale continues today from 9am to 5pm and tomorrow from 9am to noon.
