The man accused of murdering Gurjit Singh in his Dunedin home can now be named — but it comes as little solace to the victim’s family.

Suppression for the 33-year-old technician listed on court documents only as "Rajinder" lapsed yesterday after his counsel opted not to apply to extend the order.

Mr Singh, 27 — who had been married in India only months before his death — was found dead at his home on January 29, surrounded by shards of glass.

Rajinder was arrested more than a week later, pleaded not guilty to the charge last month and has remained in custody since, without applying for bail.

Otago Punjabi Association Trust member Narindervir Singh said members of the victim’s family were somewhat relieved the defendant’s identity had been revealed but were still struggling immensely with their grief.

He said they were likely to attend future court hearings.

Mr Singh’s father, Nishan, flew from India to New Zealand after hearing of the tragedy and said he had faith in the justice system.

His son’s body had since been repatriated and Narindervir Singh said the family were grateful for the support they had received from around New Zealand.

A Givealittle page raised nearly $46,000 from almost 1000 donors in three weeks.

"This money, we’re not evaluating Gurjit. He was a precious gem to his family. There’s no money or nothing in this world which can bring Gurjit back," Narindervir Singh said.

"But [people] have come forward and shown that we are one, no matter what colour or caste."

Detective Senior Sergeant Kallum Croudis said a large team of investigators had worked on the case and he paid tribute to forensic scientists as well as members of the public who had assisted with the inquiry.

Rajinder will appear before the High Court again in April.
