Window smashing and threats lead to couple's arrest

An 18-year-old Oamaru woman smashed 16 windows in an Oamaru house on Saturday, and a 23-year-old man with her threatened to kill an occupant in an argument which flared up between associates, police say.

Sergeant Craig Sew Hoy, of Oamaru, said yesterday the couple went to the Thames Highway house about 5pm on Saturday, the woman moving around the house and smashing windows.

Police said the man threatened to kill the occupant, and later a member of the public, had an offensive weapon, behaved in a disorderly manner likely to cause violence and resisted arrest when police arrived.

Sgt Sew Hoy thanked members of the public who helped police.

Both will appear today in the Dunedin District Court.

A utility was stolen from Goodwood Rd near Palmerston after its owner parked it and left it for a short time with the keys in it about 9am on Saturday.

When he returned, it was gone. A short time later, police found a 46-year-old Dunedin man driving it at Waitati.

Sgt Sew Hoy said the incident illustrated the danger of leaving vehicle unlocked with keys in the ignition.
