Buddy programme looking for volunteers

A buddy programme is looking for adult buddies to inspire the minds of young people in South Otago.

Family Works Presbyterian Support Otago’s buddy programme is looking for volunteers to put their hand up in Balclutha and surrounding areas.

The programme aims to create positive environments for youths who are in need of social development opportunities.

Buddy co-ordinator and community connector Kirsty Tribe said the programme was "lacking in volunteers".

"We have not long had two of our volunteers finish up as they’re retiring, so we’re pretty desperate," she said.

"Anyone over 18 can be an adult buddy.

"They can catch up with their child buddy once every week or fortnight and spend time with them."

The programme has been running in the area for 25 years.

"There used to be many volunteers but now we’re struggling."

Children are referred to the programme then paired with their adult buddy, and from there can have outings or just spend time with a person who is not family.

"We interview the adult buddies to make sure they are the right fit for our child buddies," she said.

"We want the children to be comfortable in the process of being with a new person."

She said buddies could spend a year or many years together, meeting on the weeks they are able to.

"It will be so good to get fresh faces in the programme.

"The programme is a great way for people to volunteer in our community."

A training session will be held in Dunedin on Saturday, March 16 to get volunteers up to speed with the buddy programme.
