Social Development Minister Paula Bennett said there would be $10.4 million in new operating funding in Budget 2014 to support sexual violence services over two years.
Mrs Bennett said the funding would give immediate stability for the specialist services providing vital support for New Zealanders and their families affected by sexual violence.
The sector required extra resourcing, especially around the availability of 24/7 crisis callout and emergency counselling services, Mrs Bennett said.
Rape Crisis Dunedin funding and resource co-ordinator and community educator Anna-Kristy Munro-Charters said the service Mrs Bennett described as vital was what Rape Crisis Dunedin provided, but she doubted they would get any of the extra government funding.
The Dunedin-based, partially government-funded rape counselling service for women had to find its funding shortfall.
Rape Crisis Dunedin held a baking stall on the Dunedin dental school lawn yesterday and raised about $500, Mrs Munro-Charters said.
The service needed the money and had about 15 women who had survived sexual violence on a counselling waiting list.
Labour's Social Development spokeswoman Sue Moroney said the Government's proposed extra funding was ''too little, too late''.
