A police spokeswoman said they received a report of a theft from a commercial premises on George St, just before 3.30pm.
Police attended and inquiries were under way, she said.
Pascoes staff at the Golden Centre Mall declined to comment, although the centre manager confirmed an item had been taken from the store.
