A fire in a Kew garage yesterday afternoon is being treated as suspicious.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) spokesman said a fire investigator would be at the scene today.

Fenz received reports of a garage fire in the suburb of Kew about 3.45pm, the spokesman said.

Two fire trucks were initially dispatched from the Lookout Point and St Kilda fire stations.

When crews arrived it was initially deemed a small property fire, but soon after it escalated, the spokesman said.

A second alarm was raised and two additional trucks were sent from the Dunedin City and Roslyn stations, the spokesman said.

The fire was extinguished at 5.15pm, he said.

A police spokesman said police assisted with traffic management while Fenz responded to the fire.
