In all, 2,410,615 people moved through the Frankton airport — 822,904 of those internationals.
The total was up from 2,393,310 in 2019.
The busiest month at the airport last year was January, when 238,786 people were recorded, while the quietist was May (148,089).
Destination Queenstown chief executive Mat Woods said part of the international growth was down to the strong connectivity with Australia.
While the resort also welcomed back the Chinese market last year, Mr Woods said another growth market was the United States, in part because of the exchange rate.
"You’re talking about 61c to the dollar, it’s so strong, so Americans can really enjoy coming to visit."
Hotel occupancy for last month was also "well up" at about 85%.
