Michael Callander (20), of Whangarei, entered a nationwide competition for a Toyota GT86 by buying a pair of $5 black canvas shoes and a bottle of Thomas the Tank Engine body wash at The Warehouse in South Dunedin.
The University of Otago third-year commerce student was ''chilling out'' on the couch with his five flatmates on a recent Friday afternoon, when he was called about winning the competition at The Warehouse.
''I couldn't remember entering and thought I had won some stationery or something, but was stoked when I was told I had won a car,'' Mr Callander said.
The Toyota GT86 is a rear-wheel-drive sports car with a six-speed manual transmission and can accelerate from 0kmh to 100kmh in 7.6 seconds.
Previously, the only mode of transport Mr Callander needed in Dunedin was his size nine shoes because his flat was near the campus.
He had considered selling the car but had decided to keep it for ''road trips'', Mr Callander said.
Cooke Howlison Toyota sales manager Steve Wilson said the GT86 cost $46,486.
On-road costs and a full tank of petrol were included with the prize.
Warehouse South Dunedin manager Gareth Michelle was ''delighted'' the winner was a customer of his store.
''It's fantastic to be able to give Mr Callander such an exciting prize.''
