The Glenorchy Races were organised by the Lakeside Rugby Club and took place at the Glenorchy Golf Club on Saturday.
The event, which had been running for 62 years, occurs annually on the first Saturday of each year and is a popular festivity for locals.
Event organiser Brylee Percy said about 2500 people attended the races over the weekend.
"It’s a real Kiwi, fun event.
"Everyone that was there yesterday came up to us and they were just amazed and loved it and thanked us for a great day."
The event’s races included a walk-trot-gallop, trotting cup, relay race, stockman’s race, saddling race, double banking, women’s gallop, galloping cup, local’s gallop and the quarter-mile sprint.
This year’s aggregate winner was Andrew Green who came first in the walk-trot-gallop and the double bank competitions.
"This year was really good and it was great that we had more horses and new people that hadn’t raced before and by the sounds of it they all really enjoyed themselves."
Attendees had the opportunity to bet on horses through a system referred to as the equaliser — punters would buy a ticket with a letter on it that corresponded to a specific horse number.
To avoid match fixing, punters only found out the horse numbers after the equaliser was closed.
"It’s got a real family feel. You have kids out there playing cricket and making new friends, people bring their dogs as well.
"So it’s really casual and laid back, which was nice."
Glenorchy’s scenic landscape provided a dramatic backdrop for what had been a "really nice" day.
While the sun began to set, attendees were treated to a performance from the Dunedin band Sea Beasts.
"Last night the band played until midnight. It was so nice to see everyone relax and having fun.
"Overall we were just really happy."
Ms Percy was grateful attendees kept the area tidy and hoped next year’s event would attract even more new faces.
